SANTA CRUZIN'

Join us for this year's Petaluma Wheelmen Cycling Club Trip, "Cruzin’ in Santa Cruz." The dates of this event are Oct. 3 - 7, with 4 separate rides planned. You'll enjoy many miles of coastal scenery, hills, beaches and Redwood groves.

Book your room at The Comfort Inn, 110 Plymouth Street, Santa Cruz, near the beach. Phone # for reservations is (831) 426-2664. For spouses and companions looking for other activities while we’re out on our bikes, the village of Capitola with many shops and restaurants is nearby. There is a pier that rents Kayaks for some easy ocean trips. The average ride will only be 42 miles, giving cyclists time to explore locally as well.

The rides that are planned will have some climbing and coastal wind, but the beautiful scenery will be our payoff. Following are brief descriptions of our routes.

1. Gazos Creek: We will travel on Cloverdale Rd., Stage Rd., and up La Honda Rd. and down Pescadero Rd. to Hwy. 1. We might want to visit Pigeon Point Light House before returning to Gazos Creek.

2. Eureka Canyon: The climb up Eureka Road is fantastic. There is very little traffic on Eureka Rd. because the top is closed to cars on Highland Road. It is a climb of about 9 miles that you will really enjoy, followed by a descent down Old San Jose Road.

3. Swanton Road: From Natural Bridges State Park, north of Santa Cruz, we will ride north towards Davenport. After Davenport, we will turn right onto Swanton Road, an absolutely gorgeous 7-mile ride through farmland. At the end of Swanton Road there is a short climb followed by a great descent back to Highway 1. From there we can take a right up to Ano Nuevo State Reserve, where there may be some early Sea Elephants to view. With luck, we will enjoy a tailwind down Highway 1 back to the start.

4. Browns Valley: Our last day will be an easy ride out to Corralitos, Browns Valley, Hazel Dell, Green Valley and back to Corralitos. This is a fun loop to complete a week of Santa Cruzin’.
